Beginner hip hop dance classes for adults
Short answer: Adult beginners should look for a class labeled Beginner, Foundations, Intro or Beg/Int. You do not need dance experience for a true beginner class, and you can usually book one class at a time before committing to a pack.
How to read class levels
Studios do not all use the same labels, so treat them as a guide.
- Intro, Foundations or Beginner: the safest place to start.
- Beg/Int: open to beginners, but it may move faster. It is often a good second step.
- Open level: mixed abilities in the same room. This can work for a beginner, but the teacher may not slow down for each person.
- Int/Adv: expects previous training. Skip these for your first class.
How to choose a first class
- Choose by level first. A convenient time will not help if the class is too advanced for you.
- Check how long it runs. In our Chicago check, beginner hip hop classes ran from 50 to 75 minutes.
- Look for a first-class offer. THE HIVE, for example, lists a $10 first class for new students.
- Check the booking rules. Some studios want you to register ahead of time, so read the class page before you travel.

What a first class is usually like
Formats vary by teacher, but many classes start with a warm-up, teach movement or a short routine in sections, and then practice it to music. It is normal to lose your place, especially in a first class. Standing where you can see the teacher helps.

Common questions
Am I too old to start hip hop dance?
The classes listed here are for adults, and Ruth Page's adult program is open to ages 16 and up. If you have a health concern, check with your doctor and tell the teacher before class.
Should I start with hip hop or a choreography class?
If you want to learn basic movement, start with a class labeled Intro, Foundations or Beginner Hip Hop. If you mostly want to learn a fun routine, a beginner-friendly choreography class such as DivaDance may suit you better.
